The Importance Of The Air We Breathe Environmental Sciences Essay Almost all life on earth depends upon clean to function and survive. However, when the air we breathe in becomes polluted, we to become polluted. Polluted with harmful toxins, germs, viruses, etc. Some may wonder, Well, what exactly is air pollution? Air pollution is the presence in the air of one or more solid, liquid, or gaseous substances in such a concentration and of such duration as to cause a nuisance or to be injurious to human life, animal life and vegetation or disrupt the functioning of the environment (Dimitriou, Christidou, 2007). This means that air pollution could be anything from car exhaust inhaled while behind an old station wagon in traffic, to a room filled with bleach fumes. These are just a few of the many ways our air can be poisoned. While this may seem like small potatoes to someone or be an issue that can wait, the numbers dont lie. The average person breathes in about 2,200 2,400 gals of air, in order to exchange oxygen for carbon dioxide with 2,200 2,70 0 gals of blood. This requires processing (at the very least) 4,400 gallons of liquid gas daily for life (Gorman, 2006). Now think about 2,200 gals of polluted air going into the human body daily! All of a sudden the issue of air pollution seems a lot more important doesnt it? In fact air pollution not only effects our current generation but also the future generations as well. Since about 1995, the number of studies linking air pollutants to prenatal problems such as LBW, SGA, preterm birth and cardiac birth defects has grown rapidly (Ritz Wilhelm, 2008). This means if the amount of air pollution isnt drastically reduced right now, we could be staring down the barrel of terminally ill children straight out of the womb. However, air pollution issues wont stop there. One of air pollutions cohorts is currently running loose on the world. This cohort goes by the name of lung disease. Over the last couple of years, cases of lung disease have sharply risen in the United States and spre ad globally. Its become so prevalent, that it has already reached #3 on the top 10 list of killers in the U.S. Lung disease causes a whopping 1 out of every 7 deaths! When that number is tallied the actual number is very sad and disappointing. Millions upon millions of people are suffering because of this disease caused by air pollution. Not only is air pollution causing lives, its also costing out cash strapped economy a lot of money. Lung disease in the United States alone, cost the economy $81.6 billion dollars in direct health care cost every year, plus tack on indirect costs of $76.2 billion dollars, and youre staring down the barrel of a total of more than $157.8 billion dollars in expenses (Gorman, 2006). The story just seems to get sadder and sadder as time progresses. However, there is still hope if society can become properly educated about air pollution. This research paper will attempt to do just that. Sources of Air Pollution Air Pollution can be caused by simple everyday things ranging from car exhaust stoves, to more complicated things such as factory emissions. One by product of these method of pollution is referred to fine particle pollution. Fine particle air pollution consists of microscopic particles of dust soot that are about 30 xs smaller than the width of a single human hair! So what can a few particles of dust do to a full grown person? Turns out these little problems can cause major life altering illnesses. According to a four-year study in AORN journal, researcher found that minute increases in fine particle air pollution resulted in significantly increased hospital visits for heart and vascular disease, heart failure, pulmonary disease, etc (2006). Now this is just an example of what one source of air pollution can do to the human body. Lets look at more. Formaldehyde is a common source of air pollution. In fact formaldehyde has been such a nuisance to the clean air cause that the EPA deemed it a human carcinogen. Despite this finding from a very trusted source, it continues to be widely used in the manufacturing of construction materials, furniture, and can also be found in paneling, cabinets, walls, textiles, floors, etc. One cant help but notice the places that the places previously listed are inside the home! This means that dangerous toxins are all around us and could be polluting our air right now. If its not bad enough to think of living with a harmful substance-think about the possibility of wearing one. Formaldehyde is also key ingredient used to produce permanent-press clothing. All of these products can off gas slowly seep) formaldehyde, therefore deteriorating indoor air quality (Royal, 1998). This segways into another type of air pollution thats often ignored-indoor air pollution. In third world countries around the world gas or electric stoves arent readily available. Therefore the majority of the population uses wood burning stoves. How does a wood stove cause indoor air pollution one may ask. Well, wood smoke is actually far more dangerous than tobacco smoke in some cases. Tobacco smoke (another source of air pollution that will be discussed next) causes damage inside the body for roughly thirty seconds after it is introduced into the body. Wood smoke on the other hand can damage cells inside the body for twenty minutes. Thats almost forty times longer than tobacco smoke! (Henkle, Mandzuk, Emergy, Schrowe, Sevilla-Martir, 2010). However, tobacco smoke is by far a more common source of air pollution and perhaps the oldest. Oldest? Yes, people were lighting up long before Phillip Morris was founded. Everyone from ancient Indians to famous explorers lit up. Modern times are no different as it seems not one day can pass with someone seeing a smoker. Perhaps smokers would reconsider their habit if they knew what they were putting into their bodies and a the air. When smoked, the tobacco and additives in a cigarette undergo complex chemical processes to form smoke that contains more than four thousand chemicals. Forty-three constituents of tobacco smoke are known carcinogens including ammonia, formaldehyde, arsenic, hydrogen cyanide, etc (Cigarette Litter -Filters. n.d.). Thats four thousand chemicals getting into your lungs and the atmosphere. So as you can see from the previous few lines, cigarette smoke is a key player in the air pollution game. However, sadly with every cause thats been listed, there must be a n equal or more devastating effect. Health Effects of Breathing Polluted Air The real cost of air pollution cannot be measured until the health cost are factored in. Too much air pollution can make anyones life a living hell. Why? Well because substantial exposure to air pollution can have drastically negative effects on an individuals overall well being. For example if a person inhaled too much car exhaust, tobacco smoke, factory smoke, etc they would be at risk for the following ailments: Major lung diseases include chronic bronchitis, sarcoidosis, emphysema interstitial lung disease, asthma, and other types of COPD. There are more than twenty eight other classified lung diseases, including, lung cancer, necrotizing and other forms of pneumonia, pleural effusions, asbestosis, pulmonary edema, pulmonary hypertension, cystic fibrosis, and rheumatoid lung disease (Gorman, 2006). With such a long list of ailments attributed to air pollution its no wonder the Institute of Medicine suggest that indoor air pollutants may lead to the development of a variety of diseases and symptoms, including allergies, asthma, central nervous system effects, infection, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, mucosal irritation, inhalation fevers,,, psychological effects, dermatitis, and some forms of cancer (Barnes, Fisher, Postma, Harnish, Butterfield, Hill, 2010). Pregnancy may constitute a period of human development particularly susceptible to toxins contained in air pollution because of high cell proliferation, organ development and the changing capabilities of fetal metabolism (Ritz Wilhelm, 2008) For example, reports by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) estimated the contribution of environmental pollutants to the incidence, prevalence, mortality, and costs of four pediatric diseases in American children. Most increases in admissions occurred on the same day as the change in air pollution level, suggesting that there was a short time period between the change in air pollution and the physiological response of the participants (2006) The presence in the atmosphere of solid, gaseous or liquid substances emitted by natural sources or as a result of human activities (for example the use of solvents, paints, varnishes and fossil fuels) damages human health, animal life and vegetation, as well as the balance of the ecosystem. Climate change and acid rain are among the consequences of air pollution (Dimitriou, Christidou, 2007) Acid rain is a broad term; it refers to a complex chemical and atmospheric phenomenon that occurs when emissions of nitrogen or sulphur dioxides react in the atmosphere with water and oxygen, forming a mild solution of sulphuric and nitric acids that are then deposited as rain. The ecological effects are most clearly seen in aquatic environments, such as streams, lakes and marshes. These and the surrounding soil become acidic and as a result aluminum is released from the soil into the water. Aluminum is highly toxic to many species of the aquatic organisms leading to the loss of biodiversity (Dimitriou, Christidou, 2007). Preventive Measures that Can Reduce Exposure to Air Pollution Prevention Quit smoking; do not frequent places where there is a lot of second hand smoke, Check the quality of air in your community. Contact the local EPA for more information. Test for radon gas in your home. Use indoor air filters in rooms where you spend the most time. Reduce the amount of energy you consume to reduce fossil fuel consumption. Do not exercise in areas of high pollution. If you work in a high-risk job, take precautions to protect your lungs. Use-masks or filters, and take frequent breaks to get a few deep breaths of cleaner air (Gorman, 2006). Studies have calculate that if air pollution was limited the stats for certain diseases would drop 100% for lead poisoning, 30% for asthma, 5% for cancer, and 10% for neuro behavioral disorders. Total costs to society (direct medical costs and indirect societal costs, such as lost work days) w e re estimated to range from 48.8 billion to 64.8 billion dollars (Barnes, Fisher, Postma, Harnish, Butterfield, Hill, 2010)

My Ideal Classroom Essay

Essay on my ideal classroom set up for elementary school children. My ideal classroom is not entirely, but almost based on fun. My main objective is to have kids come into my class room and feeling that Ms. English’s classroom is a whole lot of fun. Not only do I want my classroom to be fun, but I also want it to be a special place for all of my children. My ideal classroom would have all of the services for all of my children to learn, grow, and thrive. At the same time, I want my classroom to be simple and not too busy. I feel a busy classroom tends to make children feel overwhelmed and more easily distracted. As far as seating arrangements go I would have to be with my class for at least a full week to figure out the configurations of the classroom. I would most likely situate the children in a group format so that they can socialize and interact with each other. I would form this group configuration based on my observations on who works well together and where the distractions originate from etc. My desk would be situated where I could see all of my students. If I were to get a Kindergarten classroom I would probably situate the seats in a group setting or large tables. If I had a third grade classroom I would definitely have a big group meeting mat where everyone can gather around during class meetings. I would also make sure to have comfortable chairs and a big couch for children to grab books and read. I want my students to have a comfortable place where they can read and relax. This furniture would be situated right next to my library area. I would have a huge library for my students. The bigger the library, the more books and you can never have enough books in a classroom. I would also have a computer center in my classroom. I feel that children need many tools in order to learn and grow. Even though a computer is a machine, I feel that it is a vital part of the classroom. I would hope to have at least two computers for my students to work on. Some children do not have access to computers at home and I think that they are a huge tool for a child’s success. They also bring in technology in the classroom which is important. Next to the computer station I would love to have a science center where children can work directly with their hands. I want a â€Å"hands-on† center where children can try new things and learn about animals and plants etc. I think it would be fun for my students to learn and at the same time just â€Å"fool† around with all the neat science â€Å"stuff. † A â€Å"quiet† area is another part of my ideal classroom. I think a quiet area would be very beneficial for my students. I would try and enclose a couple of desks off in a corner with bookshelves for any children who need some alone or work time. My classroom would also have many visuals. I want every part of my classroom to be learning aides. The children should learn from what I put on the walls. I would have many signs up for the different centers and put up the alphabet (in Murray format of course), drawings, pictures, colors, numbers, shapes, basically everything to cater to the grade level that I teach. I would also make sure that I cater to any of the special needs students that I probably will have. This write up of my ideal classroom is obviously not perfect; however, I feel that it is an adequate sketch of how I would visualize my own classroom. I think being in the actual environment, and getting to know your students, along with learning from experience on what works and what doesn’t is what will help me set up my classroom. Physical exercises is very important to the body of a normal human being as they have several benefits mainly for the aged people. The time lost during the physical exercises doesn’t affect the performance of a student, but instead it helps boost their grade According to a meta-analysis that was done on 16 studies by the use of true experimental designs, there is a very great relationship between physical activity and the academic achievement of a student along a list of some measurements which include the intelligent quotient, the academic achievements memory and mathematics tests. The results after this study showed that all these categories are affected positively by physical activities except memory According to the finding, fitness may have a relationship with cognitive function. Fitness cannot provide any understanding of the mechanism by which the brain can be affected by aerobic fitness in kids. Participation in the physical activity by the children may be affected some factors like socioeconomic status and this make it very difficult to the influence of fitness. The importance of the research that was done recently was to determine and know more about hoe the brain function of the child is related to high or low fitness of children. As a person ages their mental acclivity is affected by physical exercises. Some experiments where done on animals and human. From the results out of the experiments, it was found that the number of exercises that a person does in several weeks’ changes the way the brain functions and this triggers cognition and behavior. As one is doing the physical exercises, there are some biological responses in both muscles and organs of a person and this changes the structure and the way the brain functions (Dishman et al. 2006). If physical exercise had the same impact on children like in the adults, their mental activity in education would be improved. People must be engaged in both physical and activities and aerobic fitness. This is because they are related to the p3 and the behavioral performance in adults. The adults who are always in physical and aerobic exercises have very great amplitude of the p3 and it is always have very fast latency. On the other hand, acquisition is basically when a bigger company takes over or buys out a smaller company. In that case, the acquired company has little but no choice to be sold out. The main reasons behind mergers and acquisitions are of survival, entering new markets, efficiency or even expanding as a global firm. Survival is considered as a reason for most of the companies which lack stability and are unable to deal with competitive forces. Thus, in this way, private or small companies can be aided financially and be assisted upon for growing into a business entity. Many companies acquire or merge to use it as a gateway to enter new or foreign markets. In such cases, acquiring or merging with a well settled firm in that current market would prove to be highly informative and helpful. Moreover, the company can merge or acquire in order to become more efficient in production and also get involv ed in a wide range of variety of products. Also, through merger and acquisition, a firm gets a chance to expand its existing operations and come into the spotlight of international market for the risk of higher revenues. (Harrera, 1996) Facts and Figures Mergers and acquisitions are quite common in the current market scenario, but the fact that how many mergers and acquisitions prove to be successful and how many end up in failure, is the true factor to be considered. Examples of mergers and acquisition are AOL Time Warner, GlaxoSmithKline, Hero Honda as well as Sony Ericsson, News Corp acquiring My Space, Vodafone Group plc acquiring a share in Essar Hutchison etc. This does prove that nowadays mergers and acquisitions are a popular strategy, easily figured out by so many companies in the market. Companies tend to combine in order to bring together their useful resources and get a bigger market share. For instance, the mobile telecommunications market is a tough and constantly changing market driven by close competition. The merger of Sony Ericsson was an effort to bring up the pool of reso urces and strengthen in front of major competitors of Nokia and Motorola. The merger has helped the company to portray a better performance in the global market performing at a comparable level with its competitors. Secondly, the company would try getting a better name in the international market, like in the case of Vodafone which acquired a share in Hutchison making India Vodafones second largest mobile market right after United States of America. (Roll, 2005) Furthermore, there are many more reasons including higher revenue and a more efficient usage of resources. Also, in the time of recession mergers and acquisitions are way more successful because many companies do not survive the credit crunch and prefer merging or being acquired instead of closing down. Therefore, many small companies are listing themselves down for this. The good news is that large corporations may actually start looking for deals again. The bad news is that the buying spree will be motivated by massive valuation decreases. While big tech companies may try to buy established companies with revenues, Mc Aleer also believes that smaller, tech-focused companies will attract suitors. They monitor different types and sizes of companies and study their developments in the business world constantly. Sometimes the clients approach them with a specific merger or acquisition target in mind. (Peterson, 2009) Another reason for the success of mergers and acquisitions is that many companies want to be more open or flexible to changes and prefer to be more global. Thus by merging or acquiring any company following a different organizational culture would be a light of opportunity. Even though some renowned companies have been highly successful with their merging or acquiring decisions, but the fact cannot be ignored that many companies have failed miserably in their strategies. For example, the Daimler and Chrysler partnership resulted in both the firms loosing around 60 billion dollars of market value, whereas AOL Time Warner realized the decrease in the companys worth of 54 billion dollars ever since the merger took place. Furthermore, a collaborative effort was launched between Coca Cola and Procter and Gamble of worth 4 billion dollars, which would bring all the brands together and the company staff working under one. This decision was soon found to be a mistake all in five months time, as the stock of Coca Cola drastically went down while Procter and Gambles prices rose. It resulted in the collaboration being called off. (Roll et al. 2009) It is important to know what exact reasons led to the failure of these efforts. Firstly, many of the companies jumped to collaborative efforts without carefully deducing the amount of risk and the great monetary loss in it. It is difficult to analyze how two different companies would work with different set of resources and how well the company would do under such circumstances. Secondly, many companies have failed with their efforts because of the difference in both the companys organizational cultures. Sometimes one management is not happy working under the other or shareholders are not satisfied with it. Thirdly, there is a likely possibility that a newly merged company does not survive due to the intense amount of competition present. This can be mainly concerned with the global market. Moreover, at times the market itself is reluctant in accepting the new company due to many obvious reasons like cultural reasons, geographical reasons, social reasons etc. Under the current global financial crisis, mergers and acquisitions are pretty much successful if carefully planned along with suitable market conditions. In this time of credit crunch, companies are coming up with cost saving or cost effective strategies and thus are flexible to small mergers and acquisitions which increase revenue and production. More flexible strategies should be used by companies to ensure the merger or acquisition runs successfully. These strategies include keeping both the company staff satisfied and aware. Nowadays, the companys employees and shareholders are not told regarding major decisions like mergers or acquisitions. This is considered unethical as employees and shareholders do hold a very vital position in the company and because of such mergers a lot of jobs are changed or eliminated. An ideal example is that of Lenovo and IBM, after the acquisition Lenovo put IBMs executives in charge as the Chief Executive Officer of the company. Furthermore, it helped change the image of both the companies and it helped regain customer trust by launching the new product of the ThinkPad X41 Tablet. Conclusion In summation, mergers and acquisitions are surely affected by the financial crisis, but companies are still considering these options because they provide a promising good start if planned accordingly as well as a significant growth in market share. Moreover, it provides a good way to battle the credit crunch by pulling together two or more companies resources together. It is evident that not many major mergers or acquisitions will be seen but such activity at a smaller level is always functioning, even at a time of financial crisis. Even though it is proven that not all mergers and acquisitions are a success and a lot of them fail to serve their purpose, mergers and acquisitions are a good way to increase profitability and market share. I personally think that mergers and acquisitions are very helpful for companies which plan to expand to an international level as it reduces the risk content, but under crisis, such risk should be avoided unless the company is highly stable to hand le the risk or is highly certain of the merger or acquisition it is about to go through.
